About the area:

Koudum is also known as ‘the warm heart of Súdwest-Fryslân’, as it lies at the heart of the south-western corner of Friesland. This makes it the ideal base for exploring the surprisingly diverse surroundings: there are woods, meadows and water here (both the IJsselmeer and the Frisian lakes). There are countless opportunities for walkers and cyclists, but also for water sports enthusiasts!

The Eleven Cities:
Within a 30-kilometre radius, you’ll find seven of the Frisian Eleven Cities: Bolsward, Sneek, IJlst, Sloten, Stavoren, Hindeloopen and Workum. Each town has its own charm and is well worth a visit.

What’s on?
There’s plenty to do in the immediate vicinity and in Friesland in general! Not sure where to start? Here are a few ideas to get you going:

Cycling in the local area

Explore the picturesque towns of the Eleven Cities by (electric) bike. Of course, you can also choose a lovely route around the Fluessen or through the Gaasterbossen. Incidentally, vintage Volkswagen buses are available to hire in the village, and e-choppers and mopeds in the surrounding area. Please ask us about the options for bike hire and similar services.

Enjoy a nice boat trip

Koudum is situated on the Fluessen and the Morra, and with so much water in the immediate vicinity, a day out on a boat is really a must when the weather is fine. There are several boat hire options in the village (including sailing boats, motorboats, small sloops and authentic Frisian skûtsjes). You can also take a boat tour in the area or hire stand-up paddleboards or canoes.

Kitesurfing and windsurfing

Are you an adrenaline junkie? Then why not go kitesurfing or windsurfing on the IJsselmeer? There are some fantastic spots nearby, such as the Mirnserklif, where there’s often plenty of wind. Book a beginner’s course or bring your own gear. Fancy something a bit more laid-back? How about stand-up paddleboarding on the Frisian lakes?

A visit to the beautiful Gaasterland

Take a walk or a cycle ride through the beautiful forests of Gaasterland, just a few kilometres away. In Mirns, you’ll find a unique spot: with the ancient Rijsterbos behind you, the IJsselmeer stretches out before you. Along the coastline, you’ll find various nature reserves and several small beaches, each with its own character. You could, for example, start in Mirns or Rijs, where you can end your walk on a sunny terrace for some refreshments.

UNESCO gems

Two fantastic UNESCO sites that are definitely worth a visit: the extraordinary Forest Pumping Station in Lemmer, the oldest working steam pumping station in the world. And the planetarium in Franeker, the oldest working planetarium in the world, built by Eise Eisinga. Lemmer and Franeker are also lovely places to visit, with plenty of restaurants, cafés and shops.

Ice skating

Will there ever be another Elfstedentocht? If so, you should definitely come to B&B Perruque, as we’re right on the route. Until then, you can feel like a true Frisian by lacing up your skates whenever the ice is thick enough. A visit to the Skating Museum – featuring all the ins and outs of the Elfstedentocht – in Hindeloopen is also well worth a visit.

Museums

Many people skip a visit to the Jopie Huisman Museum is not to be found in Workum. This remarkable Workum native – first a rag-and-bone man, later a painter – has his own magnificent museum. Furthermore, the aforementioned Skating Museum well worth a visit in Hindeloopen, but also the Hindeloopen Museum, while you're here anyway. The Maritime Museum in Sneek (great for the little ones too) is one of our personal favourites! Don’t forget the UNESCO gems. A little further on, on the Afsluitdijk, you’ll find the spectacular Casemate Museum. The ‘Make Museum’Museum Joure is also a special place. And there’s plenty more to discover – please ask us about the options.
